VERNON, B.C. — Mike McEwen of Winnipeg and Niklas Edin of Sweden remained unbeaten Friday evening at the Swiss Chalet National curling event.
Edin, who knocked off Olympic champion Kevin Martin of Edmonton on Thursday night, beat two-time Brier champion Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg 7-4 on Friday to improve his record to 4-0.
McEwen is 5-0 after an 8-5 victory over three-time world champion Glenn Howard of Coldwater, Ont. The loss dropped Howard to 2-2 with one game remaining in his round-robin schedule. Howard had to defeat Quebec’s Martin Ferland in Friday night’s final draw to have a chance at a playoff or tiebreaker berth.
Stoughton, Martin, Edmonton’s Don Walchuk and Toronto’s Wayne Middaugh all have records of 3-1 at the Grand Slam of Curling event.
Earlier Friday, Jason Montgomery of Duncan, B.C., lost 6-5 to Martin. Montgomery (2-2) was set meet Edin in the final Friday night draw.
In other afternoon games, world champion Kevin Koe of Edmonton edged Randy Ferbey of St. John’s 5-4 and Middaugh snuck past Calgary’s Brent Bawel 7-6 after a last-rock measurement.
Tiebreakers (if necessary) will take place this morning. The quarter-finals begin at 2 p.m. CT Saturday, with the semifinals at 8 p.m. The championship final takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday.
