HE didn’t make it look easy and, at times, made it harder than it had to be.

But in the end, Stonewall’s Sam Good did exactly what his fellow competitors felt he would do — he won the 2011 Manitoba junior men’s curling championship.

The pre-event top seed did exactly what he had to do on the final day of competition at the Gimli Curling Club on Monday. First, he squeaked out a 7-6 win over Deer Lodge’s Joey Witherspoon with a last-rock draw in the semifinal.

And in the final against Pembina’s Daniel Birchard, it was late-end dramatics by Good again. Drawing against three Birchard counters in the 10th end, Good kept his opponent to a tying steal of one.

That set up an extra end and this time Good drew the four-foot for his second Manitoba junior men’s title in three years. Good, with third Riley Smith, second Taylor McIntyre and lead Dillon Bednarek, will represent Manitoba at the Canadian Juniors in Calgary, Jan. 29-Feb. 6, where Good and McIntyre will be looking to improve on their 6-6 showing in 2009.

“We had lots of chances that year,” said Good. “Four of the six games we lost were on last rock. So if we play as well this time, I think we’ll do really well…”

Good had to take the long route to this year’s provincial final when he lost the 1 vs. 1 page playoff game 6-3 to Birchard on Sunday night, sending Good to the semifinal. And even before that, it was evident the Good team had a flair for the dramatic.

In a first-place showdown with West Kildonan’s Kyle Doering on the final draw of the round-robin earlier Sunday, Good needed only to hit and stick an open hit in the extra end.

But his attempt rolled out, blanking the extra-end and forcing that curling rarity — a 12th end, where Good scored a 7-6 win over Doering that put him into the 1 vs. 1 game.
