THE field for the 2011 Tim Hortons Brier started to take shape this weekend with five provincial champions booking tickets to the national men’s curling championship.

Two-time bronze national medallist James Grattan will be playing in his ninth Brier when action gets underway March 5 in London, Ont., after he captured the New Brunswick title Sunday.

Grattan, from Oromocto, N.B., skipped his province to a third-place showing in 1997 as a Brier rookie. He was also part of Russ Howard’s team in 2002 which placed third.

Meanwhile, Shawn Adams is back on the national stage after a five-year absence when he beat Steve Ogden in the Nova Scotia final 7-5.

Pat Simmons will also be back at the nationals after defeating Carl deConinck 8-6 in the Saskatchewan final. Simmons last played in the nationals in 2008, reaching the semifinals.

François Gagné also played his way to the Brier, scoring one with hammer in an extra end to defeat Jean-Michel Ménard 8-7 in the Quebec final.

Saturday night, Brad Gushue clinched his fifth straight Newfoundland and Labrador title with a 7-1 win over Alex Smith. Gushue, who will be making his eighth trip to the Brier, breezed through the round robin with a 5-0 record and needed only seven ends to win in the final.

The Prince Edward Island championship wraps up Tuesday, and most other provinces’ championships conclude Feb. 13.
