SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — Brad Jacobs drew arguably the toughest group at the BDO Canadian Open this week in Kingston, Ont., but hasn’t let the tough competition faze him.
The skip from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., is 3-0 through four draws at the second leg of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling, including wins over two-thirds of Alberta’s big three.
Jacobs opened the event with a stunning 4-3 win over Olympic champion Kevin Martin of Edmonton on Wednesday night. He followed up with a 6-4 win over Edmonton’s Robert Schlender on Thursday and an 8-3 thrashing of Kevin Koe’s rink from Edmonton and Calgary in the afternoon draw.
Jacobs took care of business with the hammer against Koe, scoring deuces in fthe irst and third ends and adding three in the sixth to put the boots to the 2010 world champion.
It won’t get any easier for Jacobs today, as he concludes the round robin with games against Edmonton’s Randy Ferbey and Jean-Michel Menard of Gatineau, Que.
Martin (1-2) got a win Thursday afternoon, 7-1 over Menard, but still trials Jacobs, Koe (2-1) and Schlender (1-1) in Pool B. Menard is also 1-2. Ferbey, the third of Alberta’s big three, is winless.
There are fewer surprises in Pool C, with favourites Glenn Howard and Jeff Stoughton leading the way at 2-0.
Howard, of Coldwater, Ont., has beaten his opponents by a combined 14-1 score, defeating Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock 7-1 on Wednesday night and Dale Matchett of Bradford, Ont., 7-0 on Thursday.
Stoughton, the defending Canadian and world champion, beat Rob Fowler 6-5 on Wednesday and hammered Laycock 10-4 on Thursday.
The usual suspects also lead in Pool A, with Asham World Curling Tour money leader Mike McEwen and rising Swedish star Niklas Edin both 2-0.
McEwen scored an 8-2 win over Toronto’s Mark Kean on Wednesday and beat Scotland’s Tom Brewster 6-4 on Thursday.
Edin won both his games on Thursday, but by narrow margins. He pulled out a 4-3 win over Brad Gushue of St. John’s and defeated Kean 6-5 in an extra end.
