Four provincial berths there for the taking today

THEY are into the last day of competition at the Tim Hortons Christmas Bonspiel, with the four final berths into next week’s Manitoba junior curling championships — two for the junior men and two for the junior women — scheduled to be determined today in a special playoff round.

On the junior men’s side, both Tanner Lott of Winnipeg Beach and Derek Harrison of Charleswood have already qualified for today’s playoff round from the A-side, while Tyler Luner of Elmwood and Kyle Thiessen of Assiniboine-Memorial need wins in their C-side games this morning to advance to the playoffs. Morden’s Devon Wiebe also had a chance to advance to today’s playoff round, but needed a win late last night over Deer Lodge’s Cole Peters.

On the junior women’s side of the bonspiel, the winner of last night’s B-side game between Pembina’s Christine MacKay and St. Vital’s Jackie Hebert earned a spot into today’s playoffs, while Assiniboine’s Sara Oliver also had a chance to advance to the playoffs but needed to beat Stonewall’s Erika Sigurdson in their B-side game late Thursday night. (Sigurdson already has her spot in the provincials.)

And finally, Brooklyn Meiklejohn of Pembina has a chance to advance with a win this morning in her C-side game against Miami’s Carly Angers, who already has her provincials spot.

If only two teams advance to the playoff round today on the junior women’s side, both will automatically be awarded the two provincials berths.

If there’s only one junior women’s team advancing today, the other berth will be determined by tracking back to the next highest eligible finisher — playing a tiebreaker if required.
