KEVIN KOE got an early birthday present on Sunday in Rama, Ont.
The Calgary skip, who turns 37 on Wednesday, made a marvellous triple-takeout with his last rock of the game to beat reigning world champ Jeff Stoughton of Winnipeg in the championship game of the TSN Skins Game at Casino Rama.
It was a perfect way for Koe’s Calgary-based team — third Pat Simmons, second Carter Rycroft and lead Nolan Thiessen — to open the new year, as it took home a cheque for $43,900 after the win over Stoughton and a victory over Edmonton’s Kevin Martin in the semifinal on Saturday.
“It’s huge,” said Koe, whose previous biggest first-place cheque was the $40,000 he won throwing third rocks for John Morris when they won the 2004 Grand Slam Players’ Championship.
“We’ve had kind of a mediocre first half of the season, so to get the new year started with a big win against Martin and Stoughton is great. And we played well, too. Hopefully we can carry that over into the provincials.”
It’s been a year of transition for the Koe foursome, which brought aboard Simmons to replace Blake MacDonald after the 2010-11 campaign; the new-look team sits fifth on the Canadian Team Ranking System, but until Sunday had yet to win an event (the Skins won’t count in the CTRS standings).
Koe and Co. head to the Grand Slam Swiss Chalet National later this month in Dawson Creek, B.C. — their final tune-up for the Boston Pizza Cup Alberta men’s championship, which begins Feb. 8 in Camrose; Koe bowed to Martin in last year’s final at High River, and had lost five straight to Martin at one point this season, but has two straight victories over the Olympic champ after the Skins win on Saturday.
“Oh, for sure it helps. But he still owes us a lot of money; he’s taken more than his share off of us,” Koe said. “But it’s a good confidence booster to beat him before provincials.”
