BOTH Manitoba rinks used come-from-behind victories to keep pace with the pack Monday as the round robin at the Canadian junior curling championships nears the midway point.

Manitoba skips Kyle Doering and Shannon Birchard each improved to 4-1 after nine draws and are in second place in the junior men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

Both Manitoba junior teams went undefeated on the day, winning two games apiece in Napanee, Ont.

Doering scored two in the ninth and stole one in the 10th to defeat Newfoundland and Labrador’s Colin Thomas 7-5 in Monday’s late draw. The Manitoba men are tied with Nova Scotia’s Stuart Thompson for second place. Doering scored an 8-5 morning win over Prince Edward Island’s Alex Matters.

Birchard scored four with the hammer in the 10th to shock Newfoundland’s Erica Trickett 9-6. Trickett led 6-5 after nine ends. Birchard beat Sarah Fullerton of P.E.I. in the morning draw 5-3.

The Manitoba women are tied with B.C. for second place.

It was a good day for both Alberta teams as skips Brendan Bottcher and Jocelyn Peterman each improved to 5-0 and are alone in first place.

Bottcher broke a 1-1 tie against Northern Ontario’s Brennan Wark with four in the fifth and stole another four in the eighth in a 10-3 win in his lone game of the day.

Peterman cruised to her fifth win of the week, beating Northern Ontario’s Kendra Lilly 12-5. Like Bottcher, she used a four-point end to break the game open. Peterman stole four in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead and although Lilly struck back with three in the fifth, it was too much ground to make up.

Thompson beat Saskatchewan’s Brady Scharback 10-6 in the morning, then doubled up Josh Barry of New Brunswick 6-3 in the late draw to move to 4-1.

Quebec’s Felix Asselin came into the day tied with Bottcher at 4-0, but lost twice and is now alone in fourth place. First he was beaten 8-5 by Thomas, then fell 7-1 to Thomas Scoffin of Yukon.
