FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone handed New Brunswick their first loss Tuesday at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian junior curling championships.
Dunstone’s squad surprised Josh Barry’s previously undefeated team 10-5.
On the women’s side, Manitoba’s Shannon Birchard stayed unbeaten with an 8-3 win over the Northwest Territories in the morning draw and a 11-2 shellacking of Nova Scotia in the evening draw. Birchard is now 6-0 and locked up a spot in the championship round robin.
Dunstone (4-2) is among eight teams still in the hunt for the weekend playoffs along with New Brunswick (5-1), Nova Scotia’s Stuart Thompson (5-1), Ontario’s Aaron Squires (5-1), Alberta’s Thomas Scoffin (5-1), Saskatchewan’s Brady Scharback (4-2), B.C.’s Tyler Klymchuk (3-3) and Quebec’s Felix Asselin (3-3).
Asselin was one of the teams fighting to keep his playoff hopes alive Tuesday night. He beat Northern Ontario’s Matthew Roberts 6-4.
It was a clutch performance as both teams entered the match with 2-3 records and both needed a win to move on.
“We kept our cool. We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game coming back from a loss,” said Asselin.
Now Quebec is part of the eight-team championship round robin that will play today and Thursday. The top four teams from Pool A will take on the top four teams from Pool B, with the records from the first phase of the competition carrying over.
The top three teams will make the weekend playoffs, with the first-place team advancing to Saturday’s final, and the second- and third-place teams meeting in the semifinal.
