WITH playoffs set to start tonight at the 2015 Canola provincial junior curling championships, the battle for some berths will go right to the wire.
After the fourth day of round-robin competition at Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club on Monday night, defending Canadian champion Braden Calvert, 2013 provincial champ Matt Dunstone and former Manitoba champion Shannon Birchard were all undefeated through six, with a guaranteed playoff spot.
Dunstone kept his unblemished record alive with a 7-3 Monday night win over fellow Granite skip Cole Peters, who fell to 5-1 on the week.
With two more draws to go — one men’s and one women’s round-robin group will play their final game at 8:30 a.m., the others at 12:15 p.m. — that still leaves some rooms for the top teams to battle for the remaining playoff spots. In some match-ups, both teams have everything on the line.
In the morning draw, Peters will face Assiniboine Memorial’s J.T. Ryan, who rose to 5-1 after knocking Granite’s Colin Kurz out of the playoff race with a 9-5 Monday night win. The winner of that match will earn their group’s second playoff berth; the loser will be out.
A similar situation will play out on the women’s side in the afternoon draw, where Assiniboine skip Rachel Burtnyk will face Fort Rouge’s Jennifer Klapp. Both teams stood at 5-1 on Monday night, just below Birchard in their round-robin group. The winner will secure themselves a playoff spot.
The 2015 provincial junior curling championship playoffs are set to kick off at 7:45 p.m. tonight, with the men’s and women’s championship games scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.
