SHE took a little bit of a detour along the way, but Jennifer Jones will indeed curl in today’s playoffs at the Canad Inns Women’s Classic.
In a rematch of the 2015 Manitoba championship final, Jones edged Kerri Einarson 6-3 Saturday to clinch a quarter-final berth out of the B-event final. That left Einarson one more chance to advance, with a Saturday night game against Barb Spencer slated to end after press time.
At first, when play opened in the Portage la Prairie bonspiel, Jones looked set to cruise to the playoffs. But in the A-side qualifier match Friday night, she was upset 7-6 by Saskatchewan’s Michelle Englot, after giving up a steal in the eighth end.
In the playoffs, Jones will join Tracy Fleury, the reigning Northern Ontario champion who turned heads in her Scotties debut earlier this year, and Korea’s Eun Jung Kim, who clinched a berth with the other B-side win. There were still four spots left to be decided through the C-event qualifiers late Saturday.
The quarter-finals are set for 10 a.m. at the Portage Curling Club, with the semifinals scheduled for 2 p.m. and the final at 6 p.m.
