The Manitoba women’s curling championship will roar into Killarney, Man. for the first time in seven years.

On Thursday, Curl Manitoba announced that Killarney’s Shamrock Centre will play host to the 2018 Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts, which will run from Jan. 10 to 14. The community last welcomed the Scotties in 2010.

That year, the buffalo jacket went to Jill Thurston’s team, which included Raunora Westcott and Leslie Wilson. The curling world being cozy place, those two are competing in the 2017 Scotties as Michelle Englot’s front end.

Since that 2010 Scotties, Killarney has added a 39-room hotel on the Shamrock Centre grounds, which will host curlers and staff. Organizers pledged it would be the biggest game in town, in January of 2018.

“The 2010 championship was a great success and at the time, we had told the community we’d be back whenever they wanted us,” Curl Manitoba director Craig Baker said in a statement. “This timing works well for both Killarney and CurlManitoba.”

If it seems as if the Jan. 10 to 14, 2018 dates are a little earlier than usual, that’s because they are. Just like in 2014, curling championships are being moved ahead a couple of weeks, to avoid being in conflict with the Olympics.
