Canadian mixed doubles team ready for playoffs at world championship

STAVANGER, Norway – Canada is off to the playoffs at the world mixed doubles curling championship.

Winnipeg’s Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant, of St. John’s N.L., settled for second in their pool after a 9-7 loss to Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa and Tsuyoshi Yamaguchi on Thursday.

Canada, Japan and Sweden all finished 6-1, with Canada getting second by virtue of the draw shot challenge.

“They played really well,” Gallant said of Japan. “(Fujisawa) made a ton of nice shots for extra points and they were tough shots. I just missed a few, we had them in trouble a couple ends and I let them off the hook but other than that we played a pretty good game.”

Canada will face Finland’s Elina Virtaala and Tomi Rantamaeki (5-2) in the round of 16 on Friday. Quarterfinals are later Friday. The semifinals and final are Saturday.

“Hopefully we have four more games here,” Gallant said. “That’s our goal, to win.”

Meanwhile, Canadian men’s and women’s teams both finished undefeated in the preliminary round of the world senior championships, held at the same venue.

Sherry Anderson’s Saskatchewan rink beat the United States 6-4 on Thursday.

“We had our struggles that game,” said Anderson, who won the world title last year. “It wasn’t the best curled game by any means, we just played a little better than they did.”

Canada advances directly to a semifinal on Saturday.

On the men’s side, Bryan Cochrane’s Ontario rink beat Italy 9-2 on Thursday.

Canada faces the winner of an Australia-Wales game in a quarterfinal on Friday.
