SASKATOON – Rachel Homan’s rink is off to a fast start at the Humpty’s Champions Cup.
The Ottawa team sits atop the standings at 3-0 after an 8-4 win over Min Ji Kim of South Korea in Thursday afternoon action at the final Grand Slam event of the season.
Winnipeg’s Kerri Einarson joined Homan as the only skips at 3-0 when she beat Casey Scheidegger of Lethbridge, Alta., 8-3 in evening play.
In the other evening draws, Jennifer Jones (2-1) beat Team Flaxey (2-2), 8-3 in an all-Winnipeg showdown, while Robyn Silvernagle of North Battleford, Sask., (2-1) toppled Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg (2-1), 8-6.
On the men’s side, American John Shuster sat alone at 3-0.
World championship runner-up Kevin Koe of Calgary was 2-0 after an 8-3 win over Switzerland’s Yannick Schwaller, while Toronto’s John Epping also was 2-0 after a 7-6 win over Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L.
Gushue (2-1) bounced back in one of the two evening draws with a 6-0 victory over Saskatoon’s Krik Muyres (0-2). And Regina’s Matt Dunstone (1-2) edged Tyler Tardi of Langley, B.C., (0-3). 7-6 for his first win of the tournament in the other.
The preliminary round wraps up Friday, with the playoffs on Saturday and Sunday.
