Jordan McDonald’s team from St. Vital successfully defended its provincial under-18 boys curling championship over the weekend in Minnedosa.

McDonald’s top-seeded squad, with Jaedon Neuert at third, Braxton Kuntz at second and Alexandre Fontaine at lead, defeated Josh Maisey of Winnipeg Beach 8-3 in Sunday’s final. Maisey had slipped past Elias Huminicki of Stonewall 6-5 in the semifinal.

In the under-18 girls final, Meghan Walter of East St. Paul earned a 7-1 triumph over clubmate Katy Lukowich. Walter is joined on the championship team by third Serena Gray-Withers, second Becky Friesen and lead Julia Millan. Lukowich downed Arah Davies of the Granite 8-5 in the semifinal.

The McDonald and Walter foursomes will represent Manitoba at the 2020 Canadian under-18 championships in Sudbury, Ont., April 20-25.

to face all-stars

HAMILTON — The Canadian men’s basketball team will face an all-star team from the Canadian Elite Basketball League in a tune-up for the final Olympic qualifying tournament.

The game will be played June 12 at Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre.

The Canadian team will be gearing up for its Olympic qualifying tournament, June 23-28 in Victoria.

Canada will be competing with China, the Czech Republic, Greece, Turkey and Uruguay for one spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Canada hasn’t qualified for the Olympics in men’s basketball since 2000.

undergoes surgery

SURPRISE, Ariz. — Texas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun was having surgery to repair his broken jaw Monday, a day after being hit in the face by a fastball.

Rangers manager Chris Woodward said Calhoun was being operated on prior to Texas’ spring training game against the Oakland Athletics. Woodward said doctors would decide during the procedure whether Calhoun would need to have his mouth wired shut, or if a plate would be inserted.

The left-handed hitting Calhoun was hit Sunday by a fastball from Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias — a former minor league teammate and friend of Calhoun’s.

for next 22 years

The Milwaukee Brewers will be paying Christian Yelich until 2042, when the all-star outfielder is 50 years old.

Yelich’s US$215-million, nine-year contract with the team calls for the Brewers to defer $4 million each year from his $26-million annual salary from 2022-28. The deal includes a $20-million mutual option for 2029 with a $6.5-million buyout, and $2 million of the buyout would be deferred.

If the buyout is owed, the $30 million in deferred money would be paid in 12 installments of $2.5 million each July 1 from 2031-42. If the buyout is not owed, Yelich would receive the $28 million in 11 installments of $2,333,333 each July 1 from 2031-41 and a final payment of $2,333,337 on July 1, 2042.

NEW YORK — The NFL players’ union extended the deadline by two days for its members to vote on a new labour agreement with the league.

Ballots from some 2,500 members now are due at 11:59 p.m. EDT on Saturday. The NFL Players Association gave no reason for the extension, though reaching so many players to meet the previous deadline of one week certainly can present logistical problems.

The union said on Twitter the extension came after a vote by player representatives.

“Every vote matters and we encourage all players to review the materials sent via email in order to make an informed decision,” the union wrote.

opening day doubtful

for verlander

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Houston ace Justin Verlander has a mild strain of a back muscle and said it would “probably take a miracle” for him to pitch on opening day at home against the Los Angeles Angels on March 26.

Verlander quickly added, “but I don’t want to leave miracles off the table.”

The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner was hurt on his second-to-last pitch in Sunday’s exhibition game against the New York Mets. He had an MRI on Monday and was diagnosed with a strained latissimus dorsi muscle.
