Mike McEwen’s team from West St. Paul is poised to confirm its attendance at the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials later this year.

McEwen hammered Ontario’s Glenn Howard 7-2 Friday night in Ottawa to improve to 3-1 at a direct-entry event. Five teams are in the high-stakes bonspiel, with just two Trials berths available.

The Manitobans likely need at least a split of their two games today to earn a spot to the Trials, set for late November in Saskatoon.

Former Winnipeg skip Matt Dunstone, now guiding a team out of Saskatchewan, is also 3-1 after dumping Jason Gunnlaugson’s crew from Morris (1-3).

Howard is 2-2, while Colton Flasch of Saskatchewan is 1-3.

Meanwhile, three Manitoba men’s team and women’s squad are still alive in an pre-Trials qualifying event running concurrently in Ottawa.

Corey Chambers, Sean Grassie and JT Ryan, all of Winnipeg, and Kaitlyn Jones of Assiniboine are in the mix to qualify for the last-chance event next month in Liverpool, N.S.
