Alberta sweeps U-18 Canadian curling crowns

TIMMINS, Ont. – It was a clean sweep for Alberta today as the women and men came up golden in the Canadian Under-18 curling championships.

It was doubly sweet for Myla Plett’s foursome as her 10-1 victory over New Brunswick was the second straight national title for the team consisting of skip Plett, third Alyssa Nedohin, second Chloe Fediuk and new lead Allie Iskiw.

“It’s so unbelievable,” said Nedohin. “I knew that we had to work hard, because we knew we’d have a target on our back. It’s hard to believe what just happened.”

Alberta blanked the first end, scored two in the second against Melodie Forsythe’s team, counted one more in the third, gave up one in the fourth, and counted three in the fifth and four more in the sixth to get the victory party off to an early start.

Plett’s crew won last year’s title in Oakville, Ont.

In the bronze-medal game, Nova Scotia’s No. 1 team skipped by Sophie Blades defeated Anne-Sophie Gionest of Quebec 13-2.

On the men’s side, Zach Davies and his Alberta team of third Benjamin Kiist, second Trevor Algot and lead Lucas Sawiak took an undefeated record in the gold-medal final and rocked Nick Mosher’s Nova Scotia team 9-2.

Davies blanked the first end, scored two in the second, surrendered one in the third, scored three in the fourth, counted two more in the fifth and coasted from there.

“It feels amazing,” said Davies. “Some of our best curling all season. I’m happy with the result … My team was setting me up gloriously. I knew I just had to finish the job.”

In the bronze-medal game, Calan MacIsaac of Nova Scotia breezed to an 8-1 win over Timothy Marin’s New Brunswick team.
