VICTORIA — Jennifer Jones has a problem and Barb Spencer’s problem just keeps getting worse.
Winnipeg’s Jones, playing here as Team Canada, registered her third loss in four games at the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts this afternoon, falling 8-4 to Newfoundland’s Heather Strong.
The loss drops Jones’s record to 6-3 and means she’ll need to win at least one of her two remaining round-robin games on Thursday to have a chance at making the playoffs, which start Friday.
Spencer, meantime, just continued to dig herself deeper this afternoon, getting thumped 11-6 by Ontario’s Krista McCarville to fall to 2-7.
Earlier Wednesday, Team Canada’s Jones spanked Quebec’s Marie-France Larouche 10-3, while Spencer’s Team Manitoba was drilled 9-2 by PEI’s Rebecca-Jean MacPhee to formally bow out of the playoff hunt.
“We’re missing straight from lead on and it’s going straight down the line,” Spencer said afterward. “We’re not getting any breaks and we’re not making any breaks for ourselves because we’re not playing well enough.”
