POWER RANKINGS

One man’s totally subjective rankings of the eight CFL teams at the midway point of the season (last week’s rank in parenthesis):

1. (1) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (8-2) — These guys were tested by the Lions, but answered when it mattered.

2. (2) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (6-4) — Something tells us the Stamps are starting another run to late November.

3. (3) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (6-4) — Are the Riders that good or the Bombers that bad? Or both?

4. (4) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (5-5) — Just too inconsistent right now. But the pieces are there.

5. (5) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (5-5) — Good teams would have put away the Argos last week. This crew is still evolving.

6. (6) B.C. LIONS (4-6) — Blew a chance to sweep the Als.

7. (8) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (3-7) — Huge win over the Ticats keeps hopes alive.

8. (7) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (3-7) — Just an awful performance in the Banjo Bowl.

JUICY NUMBER — 8

The number of CFL quarterbacks who have thrown for more TDs this year than Stefan LeFors and Michael Bishop combined. The two Bomber pivots have teamed up to throw for five, trailing Calgary’s Henry Burris (17); Edmonton’s Ricky Ray and Anthony Calvillo of Montreal (14); Darian Durant of Saskatchewan (13); B.C.’s Jarious Jackson (12) Hamilton’s Kevin Glenn (9); Toronto’s Kerry Joseph (7) and Buck Pierce of B.C. (6).

FYI

Muhammad Ali used to say, ‘It ain’t bragging if you can back it up.’ Credit Alouette defensive end Anwar Stewart, then, with this statement before Montreal avenged an earlier loss in B.C. by beating the Lions on Sunday. "We’re gonna answer the bell. We owe them. They’re going to get it," Stewart said told The Montreal Gazette. "Winnipeg went in there and won. Hamilton went in there and won. We’re a lot better than we showed."

If you saw some real concern in the face of Lions’ head coach Wally Buono during their sixth loss in 10 games on the weekend, you’re not alone. "I know we’re a good 4-6 team, but if you start to get solace from that then you start to accept losing," Buono told The Province in Vancouver.

SAY WHAT?!

"They’re shaking in their boots. It felt like they realize they got away with one. They better hope we don’t play them again because if we play them again they’re going to choke. No doubt about it, that game should let everybody know they’re not invincible."

— Lions defensive tackle Aaron Hunt after Sunday’s loss to the Montreal Alouettes.
