MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — Jim Barker’s patience with quarterback Cleo Lemon finally ran out.
Lemon, who started 27 of the last 29 games for the Toronto Argonauts, was released on Tuesday.
Barker, the club’s head coach and general manager, had been Lemon’s biggest supporter since the former Miami Dolphins quarterback was brought to training camp in 2010.
The move leaves the Argos with just one quarterback with significant experience in the Canadian Football League. Steven Jyles, who spent the first half of the season on the injured list, will dress on Saturday for the first time.
His surgically repaired throwing shoulder is now fully healed. He has not played in a game since last October when he sustained the injury.
Dalton Bell, who was the team’s backup the past two years, has started just two games in his professional career. He threw four interceptions during the second half of last week’s game against the B.C. Lions.
Lemon completed 11 of 15 passes for 56 yards during Friday’s loss to the Lions. He was pulled at halftime and spent most of the second half at the end of the team sideline. Television cameras caught Lemon making an uncomplimentary facial expression after Bell, his replacement, threw an interception.
Barker had defended Lemon following the game.
“Cleo didn’t get help,” Barker told reporters when asked why he pulled his No. 1 quarterback. “He had dropped balls and there was a missed route and things like that. I just felt like you can’t change the whole offence. You change one and hope you energize them.”
Jyles was acquired from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers during the off-season in exchange for Toronto’s top pick, fourth overall, in the 2011 draft and a conditional pick in 2012. He started 11 games for Winnipeg last year, completing 61.6 per cent of his passes for 2,804 yards. He also carried the ball 65 times for 452 yards.
Jyles has been in the CFL since 2006, but last year was the first time he attempted more than 42 passes in a season.
B.J. Hall, the team’s third-string quarterback, has no career starts.
