Hey there, time traveller!

THERE’S another week left in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s regular season, but Thursday night’s game had playoffs written all over it for the Sturgeon Heights Huskies.
Led by three touchdowns and a field goal by Zach Regert and two touchdowns by Darius Attiglah, the Huskies (3-3) defeated the Murdoch MacKay Clansmen 38-15 at Canad Inns Stadium during a Potter AAA division battle for fourth place.
“How we approached it was if we finished tied with them (Murdoch), this win would give us the tiebreaker and home-field advantage,” said Huskies head coach Rob Bell. In the quarter-finals, the fourth-place team will host the fifth-place team.
“We’ve talked to them over the last little bit about playing with passion and intensity and I think we finally brought that today,” Bell said. “We’ve battled some injuries the past couple weeks and we’re not 100 per cent yet but we’re close.”
The battle was so heated that a car in the parking lot started on fire. Actually, it appeared to be an electrical fire in the engine of a luxury sedan in the lot but fire crews extinguished the blaze quickly and no one was injured.
The Clansmen got on the board first with a single point off quarterback/kicker Drenin Busch’s opening kickoff. But the Huskies were howling after that as they scored 35 straight points and stopped the Clansmen on four third-down gambles.
Regert, the Huskies’ 6-foot-4 receiver/kicker/returner, scored touchdowns on catches of nine yards and 75 yards from quarterback Chas Moore while Attiglah scored a touchdown on a thrilling 90-yard catch-and-run play.
Early in the third quarter, the Huskies got an 18-yard touchdown from Attiglah and took a 28-1 lead after the Sturgeon side got the ball back when the Clansmen fumbled the ball on a punt return. Huskies linebacker Jordan Herdman, who along with his brother Justin led Sturgeon with waves of tackles, recovered the ball.
Midway through the fourth quarter, Sturgeon led 35-1 after Regert’s third major of the day, a six-yard catch.
“I thought our passing game was going really well and our running game was pretty solid too, our whole offence was great,” Regert said. “We had a good start to the game and followed all the way through.”
Murdoch MacKay head coach Ron Bresch said the Clansmen were ready for a battle this season moving up to the Potter Division with a young team.
“We are pleased with our showing so far,” Bresch said of his 2-4 club. “Drenin Busch and his young receivers, who are all grade 10, showed great courage catching in traffic.”
The quarter-finals are set for Oct. 26-27.
