It started out as a ground-game duel between Sisler Spartans running back Jayde Erasmo and Elmwood Giants tailback Tyree Cayer on Wednesday in the Winnipeg High School Football League’s Currie A Division championship game.
The Giants threw in a few wrinkles by going to the air for some big gains but it wasn’t enough to combat the Spartans as Sisler defeated Elmwood 35-14 at Canad Inns Stadium.
It is the first A Division title for the Spartans since 2007, who had an undefeated regular season.
The championship games continue today at the stadium with the Grant Park Pirates meeting the Miles Macdonell Buckeyes in the Free Press Bowl for the Vidruk AA division championship at 5 p.m. The ANAVETS Bowl game will follow at 7:30 p.m. featuring the St. Paul’s Crusaders taking on the defending champion Oak Park Raiders.
The Spartans got a poised performance from quarterback Riley Harrison, who ran the ball numerous times himself to keep the Elmwood defence off balance.
It’s more than good, nine years of football, this is my first championship. Just can’t explain it, I feel really good,” Harrison said, noting both his older brothers Mitchell and Brett were on the Spartans team that won in 2007.
“That’s what makes it so memorable right now. They were undefeated as well.
“This whole season, once we went undefeated, in the post-season, we were just thinking 10-and-oh, 10-and-oh, championship, that’s all I could think of.”
The Spartans had jumped to a 28-14 lead at the half after touchdowns by Erasmo (three-yard run), Harrison (22- and 11-yard runs) and running back Kervin Lopez (62-yard run).
Erasmo scored just three minutes in, which set the tone for the game, and scored a nine-yard rushing major to seal the win with 1:06 left in the game.
Elmwood, which came back from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit, got second-quarter majors from Cayer and quarterback Kingsley Khamphavong.
With about two minutes left, the Spartans took an unnecessary roughness penalty giving Elmwood the ball on Sisler’s 39-yard line.
Elmwood attempted a long pass to Stephen Ugbah but took their an unncessary roughness penalty on the play.
Chaves was named Sisler’s player of the game while running back Tyree Cayer was Elmwood’s player of the game. The game’s most valuable player was Sisler’s running back Jayde Erasmo.
