Randy Turner Thinks You Should Know..

THAT the Bombers are finally beginning to forsake a lot of bravado for more realistic expectations for blowing up an entire team during the off-season and starting 2009 with Nos. 1 and No. 2 quarterbacks who still have on their training wheels.

The motto for these days: "Did we get better as a team?" said head coach Mike Kelly. "Every week we’re looking for improvement."

Fred Reid

So it’s been one step back, one forward, one back.

Kelly is also quick to preach patience, for both his players and his methods.

Why? "Because I look on the schedule and there’s 15 games left to play," he said. "It’s a marathon. I know that. I’ve been through this. Anything can happen."

And anything can happen, no doubt, beginning with the 1-2 Toronto Argonauts at Canad Inns Stadium this Friday.

AVON CALLING:

Hey, say what you want about the Bombers’ anemic passing game to date, but Fred Reid continues to put up solid numbers. Reid is ranked second in rushing only to Montreal’s Avon Coburne, who has 317 yards on 54 carries for a 5.9 yard average.

Winnipeg’s Reid, meanwhile, has amassed a higher average (6.2 yards) on 42 carries for 261 yards. Not bad for a team still adjusting the massive human parts to a rebuilt offensive line.

PUNTING ALONG:

The good news is Mike Renaud is leading the CFL in punting. The bad news: it’s not average.

To date, the rookie has punted 31 times for a total of 1,195 yards — that’s tops in the CFL. Renaud’s average of 38.5, however, is the lowest in the league. Edmonton’s Noel Prefontaine leads the CFL with a 46.3 average.

Clearly, Renaud has room to grow. Coach Kelly believes the kicker will, too.

"I’m excited about (Renaud’s) growth potential," Kelly noted. "I like the way he’s driving the ball. I like his composure. He has placed the ball where I wanted him to place it."

Bombers add depth at LB

Thank you, Mike Riley.

The Bombers signed another alumni of former head coach Mike Riley (Oregon State), with the addition of linebacker Derrick Doggett to the practice roster Tuesday.

Oosterhuis at bottom of totem pole

Former defensive tackle-turned fullback Jon Oosterhuis on being listed second-last on the CFL reception charts, with two catches for 23 yards: "That’s the bottom of the totem pole," he said. "There are a lot of people (blanking) on me. That’s OK, though."

Hey, how many yards would Doug Brown have by now?

Kelly: Semper Fi

Head coach Mike Kelly on why he’ll be reluctant to pull any starters, including quarterback Stefan LeFors, even if they are struggling to find their way. It’s all about overcoming adversity. "These guys have to know I believe in them," he said. "Then let ’em play."
