“They’re as good a group as I can remember and there were so many contributors (Saturday) that that group collectively needs to be applauded.

"They still have a ways to go to be even better, I think. Coach Nelson is on them all the time about the things they could still do and be a little more proficient at. But the key is they’re setting the tone as to what kind of football team we want to be.

"That was the plan all along — you build the defence first and your special teams will be better because you’re defence is better and then the offence will be the last thing that comes along.

"They’re setting our personality right now. And our offence, as much as we’ve struggled, we thrive off what the defence is doing for us.

“Look at Neil McKinlay… he comes in and has an interception and a fumble recovery. Those are the kind of players we want around here, guys that aren’t worried about ‘Oh, my stats aren’t very good.’ Romby Bryant made a great point (Saturday), he said, ‘Coach, I don’t care if I catch any balls as long as we win.’ That’s the kind of mentality we have.”

QUOTABLE: “When an ugly guy like me gets any kind of date you’re happy with it so I’ll take any kind of win right now. Ugly, good-looking… it’s doesn’t matter. I’m just taking it right now.” — Kelly.

INJURY UPDATE: WR Craphonso Thorpe has tweaked a hamstring, Kelly said Sunday, and will be out for one or two weeks. WR Adarius Bowman, who missed the last two games with a hip flexor) is practising and will be activated.
