Power rankings

One man’s totally subjective rankings of the eight CFL teams after Week 5 of the season (last week’s rank in parenthesis):

1. (1) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (7-1) — Another week, another win. No one has shown they can hang with the Als to date.

2. (3) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (4-4) — The Alouettes proved too much for the Riders but this team can beat anyone else in the league at any time.

3. (2) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (4-3) — The week off should help this bruised and battered group.

4. (4) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (4-3) — The Tabbies are the surprise in the East and have a big game with the Eskimos this weekend.

5. (5) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (3-4) — Inconsistent, but they’ll have fun with the Argos this week.

6. (6) B.C. LIONS (3-5) — Problems on both sides of the ball.

7. (8) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (3-5) — Ground attack was enough to beat the Lions but they’re still one-dimensional on offence.

8. (7) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (2-5) — We’ll see if the week off helped or hurt the Boatmen.

Juicy number — 1

Alouettes receiver Ben Cahoon caught a touchdown pass on Friday night to stand with one after eight games this season. It’s mind-boggling that Cahoon could go this long without at TD catch, especially in Montreal’s juggernaut of an offence. Might be fun to watch him go now.

Free Press football writer Ed Tait floated this out in last week’s edition of the In The Huddle:

“In one of our earlier Huddle rants this season we brought up our frustration over seeing the Rona spot where the brain-dead husband builds a deck INSIDE his house. It’s stupid, it makes no sense and we’re seeing more and more fans moan about it in chatrooms all over the CFL and in our own Cover it Live discussion board on winnipegfreepress.com. Seriously, if Kia Forte can spike those spots that made all their owners look like fools — ‘Kung fu/beekeeping … not my Forte, but that is…’ — why can’t Rona see it’s also got a complete dud on its hands? Anyone for starting a petition to get the thing yanked? We’ll be the first to sign.”

Well, ask and you shall receive. A reader sent this link to In the Huddle, where folks can sign a petition to put a halt to the commercials. No word on whether Eddie was the first to put down his name or whether the petition is having any success. Stay tuned.
