IT’S now official: The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, literally and figuratively, got nothing in the trade that sent defensive end Gavin Walls to the Montreal Alouettes.
The Bombers have released Canadian defensive lineman Stan Van Sichem — acquired from the Als for Walls in late February — just days before the opening of rookie camp on Wednesday.
The Bombers moved the 30-year-old Walls because of salary-cap and age concerns, but also because of the emergence of Odell Willis and Phillip Hunt last season.
Van Sichem was a fourth-round selection by Montreal in last year’s draft, but dressed for only two games. The Bombers now have five non-import defensive linemen coming to camp: veterans Doug Brown, Don Oramasionwu and Justin Shaw, draft pick Chris Greaves and former University of Calgary star Deji Oduwole.
ADD TWO, LOSE ONE: The Bombers announced the addition of two Canadians while losing another on Monday.
The club added linebacker Giancarlo Rapanaro (5-10, 188, Wilfrid Laurier), who started for three years with the Golden Hawks. Rapanaro was an OUA first-team all-star and second-team all-Canadian last season after registering 37.5 tackles, 4.5 sacks, one forced fumble and three interceptions.
The Bombers also announced that Winnipeg Rifles receiver Yembeh Moiba, a graduate of Kelvin High School, will practise with the team during training camp.
Meanwhile, Canadian O-lineman Derrick Armstrong — who arrived after the 2009 season as part of the Romby Bryant/Arjei Franklin trade to Calgary last September — has retired.

ROOKIE NUMBERS: Expect the Bombers to have 34 CFL newcomers, plus all four quarterbacks, on the field for their first rookie workout on Wednesday. The club has yet to announce the signing of their draft picks — Greaves, receiver Cory Watson, linebacker Chris Smith and running back Anthony Woodson — but all are expected to arrive with signed contracts in hand.
