POWER RANKINGS

One man’s totally subjective rankings at the midway point of the CFL season (last week’s rank in parentheses):

1. (1) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (8-1): Loaded with talent and you get the feeling they could even get better.

2. (2) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (6-3): Let’s sum up what everyone in Montreal is thinking: Get well soon, Mr. Calvillo.

3. (3) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (6-3): Pushed hard by the Bombers, but got it done when it mattered most.

4. (4) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (5-4): So much for their 1-4 start: have now won the season series with both the Argos and Bombers.

5. (5) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (5-4): Cracks are appearing in the good ship Argonaut.

6. (8) B.C. LIONS (2-7): Best of the rest.

7. (6) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (2-7): Just not quite good enough across the board to finish games.

8. (7) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (2-7): That 52-5 loss to the Stamps is going to leave a lot of scars.

JUICY NUMBERS

108-20 — The combined total score of Calgary’s two wins over the Eskimos in the last three weeks. Battle of Alberta? Ha.

FYI

Loved that reverse-flea-flicker trick play the Bombers trotted out in Sunday’s loss when Buck Pierce connected with Adarius Bowman for 63 yards. Same can’t be said for Rider head coach Ken Miller, who joked with reporters afterward: "I’m sorry I taught (Bomber head coach and ex-Rider offensive coordinator Paul LaPolice) that one. We worked on that last year. I couldn’t get him to call it last year. I was lost after the reverse. I was just hoping that we had great containment. And then when the ball went up in the air, I won’t say exactly what I said."… Calgary QB Henry Burris moved past Dieter Brock into 10th place on the CFL’s all-time yardage list on the first play of Monday’s win over Edmonton… Word is the Argos and Lions are the leading contenders to sign Canadian defensive end Rickey Foley, the ex-B.C. star who has spent this season chasing an NFL shot with Seattle and the Jets but is now a free agent… Kudos to Ticat linebackers Otis Floyd, Jamall Johnson and Markeith Knowlton after they donated 600 tickets to the Labour Day game to the union that represents employees at a local plant that is going to shut down next year. "I just felt that the blue-collar workers are the heart of Hamilton, so why shouldn’t the heart of the Ticats defence do something for them," Floyd told The National Post… Numbers for Bomber fans wallowing in misery: In the 16 games he’s played for Calgary since being traded there last year, receiver Romby Bryant has pulled in 66 passes for 1,073 yards and seven TDs.
