PENCIL Terence Jeffers-Harris back onto the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ depth chart.
For one more year, at least.
The talented receiver, who pulled in 48 passes for four touchdowns in just 11 games last year as a rookie with the Blue and Gold, passed through the final rounds of the National Football League draft Saturday night without being selected. That means the 22-year-old will be back for a second year with the Bombers, as he is still under contract for one more season with the club.
A two-year starter at the University of Connecticut before transferring to Vanderbilt but running into eligibility problems, Jeffers-Harris came north to Winnipeg after being scouted by Bombers GM Joe Mack. But because he had not yet passed through the NFL draft, he was eligible to be picked this past weekend.
That said, had one of the 32 NFL teams selected him, that organization would have been faced with a decision:
1. Buy out the final year of his contract with the Bombers, or 2. Let him play the 2011 season in Winnipeg before he would join them in 2012.
Mack confirmed the Bombers would have had a “morality issue” to deal with if Jeffers-Harris had been drafted, as he could have made significantly more money down south to take care of his family.
All this is moot now and the Bombers offence is better for it.
A 6-foot-2, 216-pound target with good hands and explosive speed, Jeffers-Harris — while he still needs work on some of the finer points of his position — bolsters a receiving corps that already features starters Terrence Edwards, Greg Carr and Cory Watson.
