HAMILTON — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed running back Fred Reid — the leading rusher in the CFL in 2010 — to a contract extension.

Details were not released, but Reid told reporters Wednesday he was heading into his option year this season and the extension means he will be a Blue Bomber for a least a “couple more years.

“Maybe two, maybe three, maybe four — just depends on how I feel as the years go,” said Reid, 29. “Hopefully I can play as long as I want. But other than that, I want to be a Blue Bomber no matter how long that is.

TREVOR HAGAN / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS archives Bombers running back Fred Reid sees good times ahead for the Blue and Gold one reason why he signed a contract extension with the team Wednesday.

“Winnipeg gave me the opportunity when I first came here (as a free agent) in 2007. And they’ve been good to me and I feel like I want to finish my career here with a great organization. I feel like we have something special here and I believe we can do some things.”

Reid was the CFL rushing leader in 2010, and was named a CFL all-star and an East Division all-star in each of the past three seasons.

Originally signed as a free agent prior to the 2007 season, Reid has rushed the ball 592 times for 3,746 yards and 18 touchdowns as a Bomber, while also recording 77 receptions for 628 yards and one touchdown.

“He’s a staple of this offence and I’m glad we got that done,” said Bombers QB Buck Pierce. “He’s a guy that definitely deserves it.

“His vision as a running back is what’s really impressive. He’s able to see holes and get through gaps that only he sees.”

Bombers head coach Paul LaPolice believes Reid will have a long and productive future in Winnipeg.

“Fred is first and foremost a great pro and has played very well. I think he can continue to grow in our offence and continue to get better and the other players really respect him.

“When I talked to him about it, he said: ‘Coach, I really want to be here. I like the direction of the team.’ So that makes you feel good.”

The Bombers held their final practice at Canad Inns Stadium on Wednesday before flying to Hamilton, where they will face the Tiger-Cats Friday night in the opening game of the 2011 regular season for both clubs.
