BRING IT ON: Buck Pierce gets the start in T.O. Who gets the end?
No one was surprised to hear that Pierce, dealing with what the team is calling a bruised quadriceps muscle in his left leg, is getting the ball when the club squares off against the Argonauts at Rogers Centre Saturday afternoon (3 p.m., TSN, CJOB)
Pierce suffered the injury in last week’s loss to the Calgary Stampeders. Coaches pulled him from the game at halftime, worried a ruthless Calgary pass rush would do more damage.
Which brings us to now and the idea that the Argos will be looking to put in an extra hit or two on the Bomber QB, just to see if he is indeed healthy enough to be on the field.
For his money, Pierce expects it.
“Everybody else has already,” he laughed Thursday. “I feel up to it and I feel good enough to go out there and perform at a very high level.”
Teams have made it a mission to put Pierce on the carpet — with penalty consequences or not. With no experienced QB behind No. 4, that’s the book on how to beat the Bombers now.
EARLY BIG GAME: With one win over the Argonauts already in their pocket, Winnipeg has a chance to take an early upper hand on an East Division rival with a victory Saturday.
The teams meet four times this season. A two-love lead after two games — with one of those wins coming on the road — would put the Bombers in a favourable tie-breaker position (should one be needed at the end of the season).
Forget the idea that a Winnipeg victory rolls the club into a terrific position moving forward (the club plays their next two at home after this one). This is about what things might look like come November.
“We do take it one game at a time, but I want them to understand the importance of this game,” head coach Paul LaPolice said. “Each game is important, but this week there are some other components besides just getting two points.”
