Pinpoint Pierce impressive in victory

WINNIPEG quarterback Buck Pierce, struggling to get things in gear through the first three weeks of the summer, was superb in the Bombers’ 33-24 win over the Toronto Argonauts at Rogers Centre Saturday afternoon.

Pierce threw 27 passes, completing 22 of them, for 361 yards and three touchdowns, bringing his club back from a 17-6 deficit in the third quarter.

Slotbacks Terence Jeffers-Harris and Terrence Edwards had the touchdowns for the Bombers, with two of those scores going for 63-yards (Edwards) and 84-yards (Jeffers-Harris).

Jeffers-Harris had a seven-yard catch for a major score, as well.

Winnipeg improves to 3-1, while the Argos fall to 1-3 and last spot in the East division.

“Offensively, we took it on ourselves to execute and stay on the field,” Pierce said. “We have to play well against division rivals.”

Defensively, DBs Brandon Stewart and Jonathan Hefney each had an interception off Toronto QB Dalton Bell. The Bombers, winners of two straight road games after dropping 10 in a row, now face a quick turnaround before seeing action again Thursday.

The winless B.C. Lions (0-4) present an interesting challenge for Winnipeg, in that the Bombers will enter the game as prohibitive favourites. That’s a new look for the Blue and Gold.

“Our theme will stay the same,” head coach Paul LaPolice said about the approaching home game. “It’s about us getting better. Every team in this league can beat anybody.”

Bombers linebacker Joe Lobendahn, who knocked Argos QB Cleo Lemon out of the game with a hard tackle in the first quarter, suffered an ankle injury later in the contest.

No determination has been made on his status for Thursday.
