TWO days after missing his flight, Chad Simpson has landed in Winnipeg.

The import tailback, who spent three seasons in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins, displayed speed and quick feet in drills Thursday, as he settles into the start of his CFL career.

Winnipeg hopes he’s the answer for the return game, specifically in the kickoff department. Simpson, 26, ran back 55 kickoffs for 1,301 yards, an average of 23.7 yards per return, in his time in the NFL.

“He’s got great skills as a returner,” LaPolice said. “That’s how these guys come in and get opportunities. Charles Roberts came in (2001) and that’s what he could do and then he was able to contribute as a running back. (Simpson) has tools for that… we’ll see how he does.”

CALL WAITING: LaPolice on the NFL draft (which started Thursday night), and how it effects CFL player roster management:

“This is one scenario that will happen: The phone will ring for every GM in the CFL on Monday. We’ll get agents calling us and there’s a lot of guys who we’ve talked to, who (Bombers GM Joe Mack) has on his ready list, ready to sign up. They say, ‘Well, let’s wait until the draft and if nothing happens there…’ That’s usually the process.”

NOTE: Quarterback Joey Elliott missed his second straight day with a quad injury. It’s unclear if he’ll be able to participate in the final day of mini camp, which goes this morning (10:30 a.m.) at Canad Inns Stadium.
