Rookie receiver to get his first start

YOU’VE got to love youthful enthusiasm and the Bombers are about to get a load of that when rookie receiver Doug Pierce gets his first CFL start on Saturday.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Pierce. “I’ve been waiting patiently since training camp,” said the 6-5 Pierce, who joined the Bombers practice roster after training camp. He had his first CFL catch in the Oct. 20 win over the Toronto Argonauts. “Right now, I’m about ready to explode. Just want to get out there and see what I can do.

Coming off the practice roster this week, also at wide receiver, is Wallace Miles.

“I hate losing so I definitely want to see us win this game,” said Pierce. “We have receivers down but every receiver we have stepping up is tough and prepared. I feel like we’re going to hit the ground running and put some points on the board.”

The Bombers will be without veteran Terrence Edwards (foot) and Isaac Anderson (shoulder).

STILL with youthful enthusiasm, Carl Volny knows how to attract attention in a positive way as the running back will get the start on Saturday against the Montreal Alouettes.

Regulars Chad Simpson (foot) and Will Ford (shoulder) will be out of action for the last game. Volny, who tore his ACL early last season, returned in September after being out for nearly a year and has seen limited action in a backup capacity.

“It feels good to get the start, I did overcome some adversity but I tried to think positive, that’s what I was doing the whole time, whether I was a starter or not, and just go out there and play football and not complain,” Volny, 24, said.

“It was exciting, running with the ones (first-team offence) and get back into the groove. Facing a team like Montreal is going to be a good challenge for me.”

A new home for the Blue Bombers is nearing completion at the University of Manitoba, more than a year behind schedule.

So the team has announced an asset sale where everything, even the iconic and oft-maligned “trough” urinal for men, is on the block.

Season-ticket holders get to buy first from Nov. 29-Dec. 1, before the general public gets a crack at what’s left.
