Blue Bombers Notebook: Edwards says he’s ready

NEVER mind last week or the week before. Veteran receiver Terrence Edwards said Sunday he’s ready for the start of the CFL season, his ninth.

Edwards missed the first few days of training camp with a lingering foot issue and when he returned, he said he’d be playing it careful for a short time to make sure he was ready for action.

While Edwards was not “overdoing” it last week, coach Tim Burke said he was not convinced Edwards was fully ready for the opener.

Edwards declared otherwise on Sunday.

“I’m having no problems with it,” he said after practice. “I pushed it to the limits today and it’s not sore. It’s not swollen. I’m getting some treatment on it just as a precautionary (measure). Other than that it’s fine.

“It’s not bothering me at all.”

THE BULLPEN IS SET: The Bombers announced their practice roster and injured-reserve lists on Sunday. Agreeing to a spot on the PR are: D-linemen Dexter Davis and Zach Anderson, receiver Wallace Miles, defensive back Wesley Pendleton, linebacker Ian Wild (all imports) and FB Carl Fitzgerald, punter Billy Pavlopoulos and former Bison safety Teague Sherman, all Canadians.

Meanwhile, running back Chris Garrett, receivers Doug Pierce and Kito Poblah, defensive back Johnny Sears, Jr. and D-lineman Jake Thomas were all placed on the one-game injured list. O-lineman Tyson Pencer, who the club insists is injured, did practise on Sunday but has been played on the nine-game injured list to start the season.

Burke said Sunday the Bombers’ personnel people were scouring the CFL cuts on the weekend to see if any names caught their interest. There are also plans to find a fourth QB to be added to the practice roster.

GAME 1 MYSTERIES: As Dan Hawkins takes over for Marc Trestman in the head coach’s spot with the Montreal Alouettes, Thursday’s visitors to Investors Group Field present something of a mysterious challenge to the Bombers.

Burke said he’s been watching video of the Als from the pre-season, but isn’t sure what to expect.

“It seems to me they’re a different team than they were last year, schematically,” Burke said Sunday. “Offensively, they’re running different plays than they did last year. Defensively, they are more of a man-press team than they were last year.

“That’s only part of their package, I’m sure. I’m sure we’re not seeing much of it right now. They definitely have an advantage on us in that respect, that they know what we’re going to do. We don’t have a clue what they’re going to do so it’ll be interesting.”

Burke said that having a good book on opponents to start a season isn’t easy.

“Until somebody has played about three games, you really don’t know what they’re all about,” he said.

Receiver Terrence Edwards was asked if changing coaches could cause perennially strong Montreal some issues.

“It didn’t cause them any issues a few years ago (when Trestman took over),” Edwards smiled.
