— News out of Montreal this week is running back Brandon Whitaker could finally make his return to the Alouettes lineup this week versus Winnipeg. And that could be bad news for the Bombers.

Whitaker, who had a season-ending torn knee ligament in September last year, recorded a dominating performance against Winnipeg last July, pulling down 235 all-purpose yards and two TDs against the Bombers in an Als’ win in Montreal.

No worries, says Bombers defensive tackle Bryant Turner.

“As long as we play at our best, do our jobs the best we can do, then it doesn’t matter who they got back there,” said Turner. “We don’t really focus on who they got on the depth chart or all that stuff. It’s just playing our best — that’s all we can control.”

REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders have parted ways with import wide receiver Greg Carr.

The 6-6, 214-pound wideout is in his fourth year in the league. He joined the Riders in a trade with the Eskimos last September.

He was quiet in Saskatchewan’s 39-18 win over the Eskimos in Week 1, with one reception for a five-yard gain.

He had 377 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 34 receptions in 14 games with Edmonton and Saskatchewan last season.

Carr has contended with injuries over his career and his production has dropped off since his first two seasons in Winnipeg, where he totalled 1,216 yards and eight touchdowns.

Carr’s release could be paving the way for Geroy Simon’s Roughriders debut. Saskatchewan’s big off-season acquisition missed the season opener with a leg injury.

TORONTO — Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray has been named the CFL’s offensive player of the week for his role in the Argonauts’ comeback win over Hamilton in their home opener.

Ray threw for 368 yards and four touchdowns and completed 24 of his 34 pass attempts in Toronto’s 39-34 win over the archrival Tiger-Cats.

Toronto trailed Hamilton at halftime, but Ray led a second-half comeback by throwing two touchdowns, including a 10-yard toss to Dontrelle Inman late in the fourth quarter to help guide the Argonauts to victory.

In other awards, Calgary lineman Charleston Hughes was named top defensive player, Hamilton kick returner Lindsey Lamar took special teams honours, and Stampeders running back Jon Cornish earned the top Canadian award.

Hughes registered a total of four tackles, including three quarterback sacks, in Calgary’s 44-32 victory against the B.C. Lions.
