Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 16/08/2013 (4484 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
He’s been a headline-maker much of the week in Winnipeg. Today, Sandro DeAngelis will try out his new home stadium for the very first time and he said it will involve a little extra practice kicking at Investors Group Field ahead of tonight’s home game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
DeAngelis, signed by the Bombers on Tuesday, has been with his teammates all week on the U of M practice field west of the stadium, while crews have been busy restoring a football setup after Monday’s Paul McCartney concert.
“Whenever you go to any stadium, you always go out two or three hours early to see what each end is doing because each end is different,” DeAngelis said Thursday. “So that’s kind of your standard protocol for any stadium you go to so I’m not going to change a whole lot based on the fact this is my first time kicking here.
“There was a first time kicking at every stadium I’ve gone to so hopefully it shouldn’t be too, too bad tomorrow.”
DeAngelis, who’s been at home in Nebraska since being cut by the Saskatchewan Roughriders after training camp, has been inquisitive of his teammates this week.
“(Punter) Mike Renaud’s kind of given me the lay of the land and obviously, when you’re kicking at a new stadium, you always want to know the little nuances,” DeAngelis said. “I’m excited. It looks like a world-class facility. I haven’t been able to practise in there yet but I’m like a kid in a candy store going into that beautiful, fancy stadium. So it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
ANDY’S IN
After a hamstring injury kept him out of five games, the visiting Tiger-Cats have activated a veteran well-known to Bomber fans for tonight’s game.
Slotback Andy Fantuz, 29, returns to CFL action in his second season in Hamilton.
The eight-year veteran had a career-high eight touchdown catches last season for the Tiger-Cats.
Hamilton also activated starting linebacker Simoni Lawrence this week.
PECKING ORDER
The Bombers depth chart for this week’s game confirms that veteran Buck Pierce is slotted in the back-up’s role at quarterback.
Controversy has swirled around the team almost all season about the quarterbacking position. With this week’s switch in starters to Max Hall, both Pierce and demoted Justin Goltz publicly expressed their disagreement with the decision.
It appears as of today that Pierce will be next in line but offensive co-ordinator Gary Crowton also told reporters on Thursday that Goltz will be running the team’s “wildcat” package, mainly short-yardage situations because that’s one of his strengths.
DIRTY LAUNDRY
Soap boxes have been in plentiful supply in Bomber-land this week but if he gets his way, head coach Tim Burke will be confiscating some of them.
Defender Johnny Sears, Jr., took to Twitter on Wednesday bemoaning the team’s release of running back Chris Garrett.
Thursday, Burke was asked about Sears’ outburst.
“I am (aware of it) and it’s been dealt with,” the coach said. “He’s been taken care of.
“I think if they question our decisions they should come in and talk to us instead of putting it out there for the whole world to see.”
