Bombers punter Mike Renaud had his most “eventful” game of the 2013 season in Guelph in Week 3.

Renaud threw an interception on a fake punt, botched a hold on a field goal and averaged just 39.9 yards punting in a 25-20 loss to the Ticats.

Any trepidation about heading back to the scene of that nightmare?

“The moment you revel in the past, you tend to make those same mistakes,” said Renaud. “It’s all about looking forward and correcting those things. That’s what separates you as a professional athlete.”

Renaud said the stadium, which holds just 13,000 spectators, threw him off his game a bit. “The stands are very low. It feels like it’s wide-open and if you let the wind affect you, you will have problems. But I’ve played at Canad Inns Stadium and I should have known better.”

With all eyes again on rookie quarterback Max Hall, offensive co-ordinator Marcel Bellefeuille liked what he saw at Thursday’s practice. “He just seems to be more sure of what he’s doing,” Bellefeuille said. “He seems to be more understanding of where the football is going to go, so the ball’s coming out on time. I really feel like he’s not holding it in practice, it’s coming out in rhythm, and that’s one of the most important things for him.”

With Gary Crowton out and Bellefeuille in, head coach Tim Burke said he saw a crisper offence in practice this week, and that everyone seemed to get on the same page quicker than usual. “It’s a difference in philosophy,” he said. “Marcel is not trying to make everything work against everything. I think with Gary’s offence, he was always trying to make every play work against every coverage or every blitz, and sometimes it just doesn’t.”

So, it’s a matter of using the right tool for the right job, then? “Yeah, and not changing the tools while you’re working.”

Speaking of tools, Hamilton pivot Henry Burris has plenty — especially, Burke said, if he gets on a roll early. “He’s kind of a streak player,” Burke said. “Once he gets going, then he’s hard to stop. If you can rattle him, then he goes into that kind of a streak as well. Hopefully, we can do a better job of putting him in a bad place.”

New long-snapper

So it turns out the Bombers have very quietly replaced Chris Cvetkovic as the team’s long-snapper.

Bombers head coach Tim Burke revealed for the first time on Thursday that Cvetkovic — who was orginally sidelined with a calf injury — was a healthy scratch versus Hamilton last week and will be again this week.

Burke said linebacker Ian Wild has done a good job replacing Cvetkovic and gives the Bombers more roster flexibility because, unlike Cvetkovic, he also plays another position.

Bombers Blitz

“It’s probably 15 percent of the defensive calls we blitz, so I don’t think that’s really (different) than most people do…Sometimes it just looks like you’re still covering in man coverage when we were actually bringing five or six guys. It just didn’t look like it because we didn’t hit the quarterback.”
