THE Winnipeg Blue Bombers took their search for better talent to a whole new level on Tuesday, flying in five or six new players and holding an extraordinary midseason mini-camp at Investors Group Field.

Sources said the closed-door session — the media was not officially informed it was happening — took place Tuesday morning and saw the newcomers put through their paces before Bombers coaches and the club’s director of player personnel, Ken Moll.

The majority of the players the club worked out were defensive backs, a position head coach Tim Burke singled out for criticism after his team’s secondary was torched — yet again — in a loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Regina on Sunday, the club’s seventh loss in a row.

Burke has made no secret all season long of his disappointment with his once-vaunted secondary’s inability to play man-coverage.

A source said at least one of the players who worked out for the club will be signed — and likely more.

Those signings are expected to be announced this morning before the team takes to the practice field for the first time since Sunday’s loss. But one signing appeared to leak out on Twitter yesterday — Colt Schulte, a 6-6, 295-pound, 23-year-old offensive lineman out of Missouri Western.
