More kudos for Muamba

Add a couple more digits to Henoc Muamba’s price tag for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

A key cog in the club’s attempted rebuild but scheduled to become a free agent this February, Muamba was named Thursday as the CFL East Division’s Most Outstanding Canadian Player after voting was conducted by members of the Football Reporters of Canada and the league’s head coaches.

Muamba will be up against Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish — who set records for most rushing yards and most yards from scrimmage by a Canadian — for the league-wide award.

Cornish could also become the first Canadian player to be named CFL Most Outstanding Player since Tony Gabriel in 1978. Only three Canadian players have been named the CFL Most Outstanding Player — Gabriel (1978) and Russ Jackson (1969, 1966, 1963).

Muamba, who was the Bombers’ nominee for Most Outstanding, Canadian and Defensive player honours, was also one of four Bombers named to the East Division all-star team this week, along with offensive lineman Glenn January, defensive tackle Bryant Turner and running back Will Ford.

The St. Francis Xavier product, chosen first overall by the Bombers in the 2011 CFL Draft, posted superb numbers in a disastrous campaign for the club, racking up 106 tackles, adding 18 more on special teams while registering one sack and picking off one pass.

His 106 tackles was second overall in the CFL to Montreal’s Chip Cox, who had 114.

The 2013 Gibson’s Finest CFL Player Awards will be handed out on Nov. 21 during Grey Cup week in Regina.
