REGINA — The Zach Collaros sweepstakes are about to get a little more interesting.
Two veteran CFL agents are courting Toronto’s backup quarterback.
Collaros currently works with Mike Simon, but is considering signing on with a more-connected CFL agent.
Collaros is viewed as one of the top quarterbacks headed for free agency. Argos GM Jim Barker has been trying to sign him, but has made little headway. Collaros is reluctant to agree to a deal as it would enable Toronto to then trade him –possibly on terms he would not be happy with.
Several teams are said to be interested, including the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Ottawa RedBlacks have stated they do not intend to choose pending free agents in the CFL expansion draft on Dec. 16. The Argos, however, must still guard against losing Collaros for nothing, and one route for Barker is to sign and trade the QB.
The Bombers are the most logical trading partner for the Argos. If Barker can’t ink Collaros, Bombers GM Kyle Walters could opt to send a conditional draft pick to Toronto for the rights to the QB and the opportunity to try and sign him prior to Feb. 15, when free agency kicks in.
One CFL GM told the Free Press this week he’s hearing Collaros wants to wait for free agency and determine his own fate.
Walters is expected to be officially named Bombers GM on Tuesday. His most pressing priorities will be landing a No. 1 quarterback and hiring a head coach.
