The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will have a little more local flavour when their rookie camp opens Wednesday.
The club announced Monday four members of the Winnipeg Rifles have been invited to their three-day rookie camp at Investors Group Field.
As well, the team has inked two more players from its 2014 draft class.
The Rifles are receiver Kurt Goodrich, defensive end Spencer Riche, offensive lineman Braiden Watson and fullback Tariq LaChance and the two draft picks are linebacker Jesse Briggs and defensive back Derek Jones.
Goodrich, 21, has played three years for the Rifles and last season pulled in 41 receptions for 985 yards (tops in the Canadian Junior Football League) and nine touchdowns. The 6-0, 193-pound Winnipeg native was named the Rifles’ MVP, a Prairie Football Conference all-star, and a CJFL all-Canadian in 2013.
Riche, a 6-4, 240-pound 21-year-old product of Brandon, led the Prairie Football Conference with 5.5 sacks and also added 26 solo tackles in seven games en route to being named a PFC all-star.
Watson, a 20-year-old former Miles Mac Buckeye who stands 6-3 and weighs 285 pounds, has been an anchor on the Rifles O-line the past couple of seasons.
LaChance, a 6-3, 235-pound fullback, has played three years with the Rifles and has been stellar at fullback, on the defensive line and on special teams.
Briggs, meanwhile, is a 6-0, 230-pound product of McGill, whom the Bombers made a deal to move up and select with the 18th-overall pick.
He recorded 40 defensive tackles, two quarterback sacks, one interception and a forced fumble in eight games in 2013.
Jones is a 6-1, 181-pound Simon Fraser product who was selected in the fourth round. He recorded 34 defensive tackles and two interceptions last season.
The Bombers have also released the schedule for their rookie camp. It opens Wednesday with a practice from 7-9 p.m. and continues Thursday and Friday with practices from 2:05-4:05 p.m. each day.
Veterans are scheduled to report for medicals on the weekend with the entire team to begin main camp on Sunday, although the current collective-bargaining agreement between the CFL and CFL Players’ Association is set to expire on Friday and has those plans in jeopardy.
