THE Winnipeg Blue Bombers are undergoing a massive makeover this season: Relatively new management, new head coach and staff and a ton of changes to the roster. Periodically during training camp The Free Press will examine some intriguing positional battles.

TODAY:

RUNNING BACK

THE INCUMBENT

30 Will Ford*

Ford made nine starts last year and finished with just under 600 yards en route to being named an East Division All-Star. Excellent returner as well. Criticisms of his game centre on his pass routes and blocking.

THE CHALLENGERS

35 Kevin Smith*

Serious NFL pedigree with the numbers to prove it: Five seasons, 54 games, 31 starts, 3,428 all-purpose yards and 22 TDs.

32 Nic Grigsby*

Has had looks from both B.C. and Toronto after an outstanding college career at Arizona. Also spent a year playing baseball with the Minnesota Twins rookie squad.

34 Paris Cotton*

Led Central Michigan in rushing in each of his last two seasons.

29 Carl Volny

Entering his fourth year with the Bombers, primarily as a backup, and another Central Michigan product.

47 Errol Brooks

Canadian prospect from York University who was an OUA First Team All-Star after finishing third in the conference in rushing.
