QB WORKLOAD: All four Bombers quarterbacks will take some snaps against the Toronto Argonauts on Monday, in their first pre-season game.

What happens after that could be interesting. The Bombers head to Calgary on June 14 for their second exhibition game, and in the past, coaches would have used that second game to rest their incumbent starting pivot. This season, there’s no such thing.

“In my mind right now, I don’t think the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are in a position to rest anybody,” said head coach Mike O’Shea after practice on Thursday. “I believe we need to play everybody, and get valuable repetitions against good opponents that you need to beat.

Quarterback Drew Willy has been a quick study at camp.

So these guys are going to get in and get playing time.”

On that note, O’Shea said he was pleased with what starter presumptive Drew Willy has shown in camp so far. “He’s grasping it all very quickly, and he’s taking the classroom on the field,” the head coach said. “He’s making quick decisions.”

RATIO WOES: Meanwhile, the Bombers were still wrestling on with the aftermath of losing non-import defensive lineman Ryan Lucas to a blown ACL. Besides being an emotional blow, the loss leaves the Bombers thin on their ratio.

But as of Thursday morning, O’Shea said, the Bombers weren’t aggressively going after a replacement Canadian.

“It doesn’t appear that we are right now,” he said, though he noted staff were planning to meet that night to hash out personnel topics. “With Ryan Lucas, the confirmation of his ACL came yesterday. I’m sure at some point Kyle’s been on the phone with some people trying to figure that out.”

OUCH REPORT: A whole whack of Bombers sat out practice on Thursday, nursing various aches and sprains.

Among these were defensive back Donovan Alexander (calf), defensive end Jason Vega (hip flexor), punter Mike Renaud (tight back), receiver Donavon Kemp (groin), offensive lineman Tyson Pencer (flu), defensive back Dan West (calf), and E.J.

Kuale (ankle). None of these were serious, O’Shea said, and everyone is “mending nicely.”

Meanwhile, offensive lineman Paul Swiston is still out, and tailback Will Ford missed his second full practice with a hamstring injury. Slotback Cory Watson’s own hamstring injury forced him to sit out his fourth practice, and O’Shea said the Bombers would likely play it safe and keep him off the field for the exhibition game on Monday.
