QUARTERBACK QUARTET AN ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE

YOU CAN count on seeing all four Bombers quarterbacks in action tonight, though how much will depend on what head coach Mike O’Shea wants to see.

“I’m not going to say it’s equal playing time, but they’re all going to get to play,” O’Shea said, after team finished its walkthrough on Sunday. “We need to do a good evaluation of everybody and they need competition. They need to be out there facing an opponent… and see how they handle it, how they react and how they move the ball for us.”

Bison pivot Jordan Yantz, who has been moonlighting with the Bombers at training camp, won’t be on the field tonight as he is not under contract.

RICKY A RAY OF HOPE

ON the other side of the field, the Argonauts are planning to put starting pivot Ricky Ray in the saddle for at least some of tonight’s game, the Toronto Star reported. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for the guy wearing Argonaut jersey number 10. That would be Robert Gill, a speedy slotback and returner who has made something of a splash at Toronto’s training camp.

NO HARD FEELINGS, BUT…

O’SHEA’S roots with the Toronto Argonauts run deep: He played 12 seasons there as a linebacker, won three Grey Cups in double blue, and started his coaching career there in 2010. Still, don’t expect much fuzzy sentimentality from the Bombers head coach tonight, when he makes his game debut against his old team.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen,” he said on Sunday. “You can ask me again after. But the way my gut is now, I think this is a game that I’m coaching. It’s an exciting for the players, for the coaching staff to see things come to fruition, finally… as far as I’m concerned, I’m a Winnipeg Blue Bomber, and let’s get at it. Doesn’t matter who the opponent is going to be.”

ETCH-ED ON THEIR BRAINS

NEW Bombers defensive co-ordinator Gary Etcheverry runs a more open defence than some other coaches, an approach that has been going over well in camp. “Etch, he preaches understanding,” said defensive back Alex Suber, of going without a playbook. “Once you understand his concepts, it makes it easier. You don’t have to just remember things. You understand.”

ADIOS, IGLESIAS

FILE in the overstuffed “easy come, easy go” drawer: On Sunday, the Bombers announced they had released receiver Juaquin Iglesias, not even 24 hours after they announced they’d signed the former Argonaut. The other Saturday pick-up, former Arena Football League receiver Bert Reed, will not play tonight.
