BRIAN Brohm has been around football long enough to understand one of its truisms:
The backup quarterback on any team is not only one snap away from being in the spotlight, he’s also a few bad throws by the starter away from being the most popular man in town.
“I’ve been the backup quarterback before and you’re always really popular if things aren’t going great and they are calling for you, until you get in there. If you aren’t doing so well it goes away real quick,” said Brohm, grinning. “It’s good to be the backup and I just got keep working.”
The former University of Louisville star spent his first full practice Sunday as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ No. 2 to Drew Willy after beating out veteran Max Hall during camp. But he also didn’t have to look too far to understand how fleeting that spot can be — in addition to strong-armed rookie Robert Marve, the Bombers also welcomed former University of Louisiana-Monroe star Kolton Browning to their practice roster.
“I’ve been in enough training camps to know you just need to keep your head down and focus on yourself,” said Brohm. “I wasn’t worried about what Max was doing, what Robert (Marve), what Drew (was doing). I was just being myself, trying to be the best player that I could be and let the chips fall where they fell.”
NEW BLUE BLOOD: With Paris Cotton on the injured list, Will Ford just returning and Nic Grigsby hobbling, the Bombers added another running back on Sunday.
Davin Meggett (5-8, 219, Maryland) appeared in 50 games with the Terrapins, making 17 starts. In his senior season he rushed for 896 yards and four touchdowns and spent time on practice rosters in Indianapolis, Washington, Houston and Dallas. And for those who are wondering, he is the son of former New York Giant Dave Meggett, although he grew up with his mother and stepfather John Davis. Dave Meggett is currently serving a 30-year prison sentence for rape and robbery.
WAIVER WATCH: The Toronto Argonauts will reportedly take a look at former Montreal receiver Jamel Richardson, who was released on the weekend after refusing to take a paid rehab gig with the Alouettes.
The Edmonton Eskimos added Canadian D-lineman Gregory Alexandre to their practice roster — he was a player the Bombers might have been looking at for depth — while Saskatchewan cut homegrown receiver Jordan Sisco.
Bomber coach Mike O’Shea said any juicy name that comes across the waiver wire will first be studied by GM Kyle Walters.
“I generally focus on what we have,” said O’Shea. “If there’s something interesting Kyle might bring it up to me. But that really is their department.”
