GM Walters has a to-do list

Blue Bombers GM Kyle Walters responded to a wide range of questions during Tuesday’s press conference to announce the signings of offensive lineman Dominic Picard and defensive back Demond Washington. Here is a sampling of his responses:

 

What does the Picard signing mean for Steve Morley?

“I mean Steve’s versatile as well, Steve’s played centre, he’s played guard, he’s played tackle. There will be ripple effects from this when you add a quality player like (Picard) and that’s OK this is professional sports. I’ll stand up here and say we’re not done. We’re going to add more quality football players to this organization to ensure that the guys who step on the football field for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2015 have beat out quality football players to play and you know I’m not embarrassed to say that and guys should welcome the challenge.”

 

Where is the team on the hiring of a defensive co-ordinator?

“You know talks are in progress there and going well. I’ve said at some point Mike’s (O’Shea) very deliberate, does a due diligence. Him and I meet and talk daily about it and he gives me an update. It’s as much as the potential candidates want to get a feel for Mike and want to get a feel for Winnipeg. It’s not quite as simple as this candidate is looking for a job, we have a job opening and it’s a natural fit. There’s more to it then that. There’s all sorts of things like any time somebody takes a different job. Both sides need to be comfortable with it, so we’re doing our due diligence and the candidates are doing their due diligence on the opposite end. I can’t give you a firm date but I can assure you it’s moving along.”

 

Offensive lineman Glenn January is a pending free agent. Will you offer him a contract?

“Mike (O’Shea) and I have a plan for every player under contract, Glenn being one of them. We’ll sit down with Glenn and he’ll know where he stands and that’s a discussion for Mike and Glenn and myself, not through the media. So out of respect for all the players, and they will all know whether they’re going to be receiving offers or not receiving offers or whether they are potential trade candidates, Mike will be open and honest and let the guys all know and that’s a discussion that we need to have now. We’ll kind of recalculate the books and figure out what our next plan of attack is.”
