Bombers’ Jefferson wants to solidify his legacy in Blue and Gold

Joshua Frey-Sam 7 minute read Yesterday at 7:00 PM CST

How close Willie Jefferson came to wearing a different jersey in 2026 might never be uncovered, but it’s an outcome he at least considered.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers star pass rusher revealed Friday that returning for a seventh season with the Blue and Gold — and 12th in the CFL — proved more challenging than it has been in other years, something that was made evident by the timing of his deal earlier this week.

The soon-to-be 35-year-old had never signed a contract this late in the off-season since becoming a member of the Bombers, and that was for a couple of reasons.

It took longer for the club and Jefferson — who represents himself in contract talks — to reach a mutual agreement on a salary, and the defensive end also claimed he wasn’t in a hurry either.

Patrick Neufeld and his fellow Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive lineman were huddled up inside their meeting room trying to figure out where it all went wrong in 2025.

It was locker room cleanout day — less than 24 hours after the Bombers were eliminated in the East semifinal in Montreal — and, unlike most of their teammates, no one on the O-line stepped out to speak with media.

“I just wanted to be in the room with the guys. As you guys know, it’s a business of change so you never know who’s not gonna be back in that offensive line room,” said Neufeld, who signed a one-year extension on Sunday, in a Zoom call on Monday.

“We were sitting in the offensive line room reminiscing about the season and, not an airing of grievances, but just talking about the season. The good, the bad, the ugly, the fun, all that kind of stuff.

Bombers’ Castillo, Sheahan praise organization after signing extensions

A kicker and a punter re-signing with their team typically doesn’t warrant a 30-plus minute Zoom call with reporters.

But that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday in a wide-ranging, engaging and thoroughly entertaining chat with Sergio Castillo and Jamieson Sheahan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The pair of specialists inked extensions with the Blue and Gold — two years for Castillo, one for Sheahan — on Monday.

In typical Castillo fashion, he kicked things off with a memorable one-liner.

WINNIPEG - Defensive end Willie Jefferson agreed to a one-year extension with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday.

Jefferson was slated to become a free agent next month.

Jefferson, 34, enters his seventh season with Winnipeg and 12th in the CFL. The six-foot-seven, 244-pound Texan appeared in 17 regular-season games in 2025, recording 15 tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and league-high 16 pass knockdowns that tied the club record he set in 2019.

The 16 knockdowns were also the third-most in CFL history. And he enters 2026 with 46 sacks as a Blue Bomber, ranking him fifth all-time in franchise history.

Canadian Football League salary cap to grow to over $6.2 million in 2026

The Canadian Press 1 minute read Yesterday at 5:59 PM CST

TORONTO - The Canadian Football League's salary cap will rise to over $6.2 million in 2026.

The CFL and its players' union made the announcement on Friday.

Revenue for the league reached $10 million more than the baseline established in 2024 when the CFL's collective bargaining agreement’s revenue growth sharing model was triggered for the first time since its implementation in 2022.

As a result, the CFL Players’ Association has allocated the majority of its share towards increasing the cap.

Pene, 25, of Tours, France, played collegiately at Virginia Tech, both as a tight end and defensive lineman. He appeared in 34 games for the Hokies, registering 73 total tackles (nine for loss) with five sacks.

Toronto Argonauts re-sign veteran linebacker Adarius Pickett to CFL deal

Dan Ralph, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Friday, Jan. 16, 2026

TORONTO - It didn't take Adarius Pickett long to find his way back to the Toronto Argonauts.

The veteran linebacker signed a one-year deal Friday with the team he enjoyed his best CFL season with in 2023. The move came just three days after Pickett, 29, and the Ottawa Redblacks agreed to mutually part ways.

That was surprising given Pickett had earned division all-star honours in both of his seasons with Ottawa, including '24 when he was limited to 13 regular-season games due to an Achilles injury.

After agreeing to take a pay cut in 2025, the California native not only reported to camp on time but didn't miss any practices or games because of the injury.

CFL rules committee proposes end to regular-season tie games

Dan Ralph, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026

The CFL rules committee wants to eliminate tie games during the regular-season.

The committee is recommending, starting this year, games that are tied after overtime be decided by alternating plays from the opposition’s three-yard line until one team scores and the other doesn't. CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston unveiled the proposal Wednesday during the league's winter meetings in Calgary.

"It's probably only happened a handful of times over the last many years … but no one likes a tie," Johnston said during a video conference.

Only four CFL regular-season games have ended in a tie since 2016, but two occurred in 2024.

Source: Four CFL teams interested in Pickett after veteran linebacker released

Dan Ralph, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026

It's always good to have options, and it appears Adarius Pickett has plenty after being released Tuesday by the Ottawa Redblacks.

The move was mutually agreed upon by both parties. Pickett, 29, was slated to become a free agent next month but the three-time East Division All-CFL selection is now free to sign with any team.

A CFL source requesting anonymity said four clubs have already expressed interest in Pickett. The source spoke on the condition of anonymity as no CFL team has signed the veteran linebacker.

The five-foot-11, 195-pound Pickett registered 164 total tackles (136 on defence), three sacks and two interceptions in 31 regular-season games over his two seasons with Ottawa. Pickett has also played for Toronto (2023) and Montreal (2021-22) during his CFL tenure.

Danny Maciocia and Mike O'Shea are both taking an open mind into the CFL winter meetings.

Maciocia, the Montreal Alouettes general manager, and O'Shea, the head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, are among the CFL officials attending the meetings in Calgary. Among the agenda items up for discussion are rules applications and potential changes.

CFL commissioner Stewart Johnston unveiled significant rules changes last September with the aim of modernizing the game over the next two seasons. This year, no single point will be awarded for errant field goals, punts or kickoffs that go through the end zone — either in the air or via a bounce.

If a returner fields a missed field goal, punt or kickoff in the end zone and either kneels or is tackled before advancing the ball past the goal-line, a single will be awarded.

League direction, Bomber shuffles up for discussion at winter meeting

More changes could be coming to the CFL.

The league’s annual winter meeting kicked off Monday in Calgary and for the next three days, coaches and general managers from all nine teams, commissioner Stewart Johnston and CFLPA representatives will gather to discuss a long list of topics related to the future of the league.

The CFL made the items on this year’s agenda public and it includes the application of rule changes, a review of the replay centre, the possibility of an American player draft to acquire player rights, possible changes to the playoff format and end-of-season player awards, Olympic guidelines for flag football’s upcoming debut at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and more.

On Monday, all GMs and head coaches — including Winnipeg Blue Bombers GM Kyle Walters and head coach Mike O’Shea — took turns meeting with the media virtually to speak on some of these ideas and also answer questions on the status of their teams.
