MAZATLAN, Mexico — Adam Speirs cooled off a bit Saturday, firing a 1-under 71 to fall two off the pace after the third round at the Corona Mexican PGA Championship.

Defending champion John Ellis and Eugene Smith both shot rounds of 5-under 67 to share the lead at 10-under 206.

Winnipeg’s Speirs, who opened with rounds of 67-70, is in a group of four that includes Calgary’s Wes Heffernan (67) at 208.

Andy Matthews and Australian Stephen Dartnall also had rounds of 5 under and were at 207, one back of the leaders.

“It was a grind out there and I never got it going despite birdieing the first two holes,” Speirs said. “The front side is where you score but once I got through that I got a little defensive for a stretch.

“I was all over the place and would have liked a few more fairways and greens. I don’t know, I just couldn’t get comfortable today.”
