WINNIPEG’S Scott Markham improved his position again Wednesday at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in Blainville, Que.
The Niakwa member double-bogeyed the first hole of the third round but followed it with four birdies before play was called Wednesday night due to darkness. At two-under through 12 holes, Markham has moved to three-under for the championship and into the top 10 on the leaderboard.
With Round 3 to be completed this morning, Markham trails leader and defending champ Cam Burke of New Hamburg, Ont., by six shots. Players will be back out on Club de golf Le Blainvillier this morning at 6:30 a.m. CT to complete the third round, and then the fourth and final round will follow immediately. Markham will tee off at 11:20 a.m. CT.
“On the first tee I striped it down middle and was 116 (yards) and between clubs,” Markham said about his Wednesday start. “I took the shorter club and tried to swing hard, left it short into a bunker, left it in the rough and then lipped out a putt.
“It wasn’t the start I wanted, but I kept going, and hit a great shot on No. 3 to three feet and made it to get back on track.”
The other four Manitoba players at the championship, Scott Borsa (151), Scott Loewen (158), Garth Collings (155) and Tyler Mancini (154), all failed to make the 36-hole cut of six-over 150.
