LONG days caught up with Winnipeg’s Scott Markham Thursday at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in Quebec.

The Niakwa member, who started the day in the top 10, slipped at the end of the weather-delayed third round on Thursday morning and then just ran out of gas during the fourth and final round.

Markham’s 12-over 84 in Round 4 dropped him into a tie for 55th place at 11-over 299 at Club de golf Le Blainvillier.

“I started making some mental mistakes and I was just worn out,” Markham said via phone before departing for home on Thursday. “It was just a nightmare. I look back at it and I think I just ran out of gas.”

During Day 2 of the championship, the weather delays began. It took Markham and many others more than 13 hours to complete that round.

And due to the backup, the third round was late starting on Wednesday and it was halted because of darkness, causing all players to return to the course early Thursday to complete the third round, then start the fourth.

New Hamburg, Ont.’s Cam Burke successfully defended his title, but barely. He won by a single shot, 13-under to 12-under, over London, Ont.’s Mitch Sutton, who birdied four of the last six holes to make it close.

Top-ranked amateurs Nick Taylor and Matt Hill tied for third.

Four other Manitobans, Scott Borsa (151), Scott Loewen (158), Garth Collings (155) and Tyler Mancini (154), all failed to make the 36-hole cut.
