SAN FRANCISCO — Michael Jordan thought it was a joke at first — Freddy Couples couldn’t be serious about making him an assistant captain of the U.S. Presidents Cup team, could he? Not when he was also mentioning comedian Robin Williams as a possibility.
But lo and behold, arguably the greatest basketball player in history is here, hanging with the stars of golf — and Couples, an unconventional thinker, says there is method to his madness.
“Michael is a very unique guy and I picked him on the team to help me out, but for a reason,” Couples said. “He absolutely loves golf, and he said a couple of the nicest things today. He thinks Sean O’Hair is terrific, and that’s what I need to hear.
“When I try to get serious, Tiger (Woods) and Phil (Mickelson) and those guys all laugh at me, anyway. So (vice-captain) Jay Haas will handle a lot of that. But Jordan will have things to say about competing under pressure, and team play, and I told him, wait and see, when all the guys get in here, they’ll be eating out of your hand.”
